Falcon volleyball is ranked 18th in the state and will enter the playoff race for the first time since 2006.
Cerritos will share third place in conference and will play Nov. 24 versus an unannounced opponent.
In the past few weeks, the Falcons have lost to Pasadena City College (25-23, 25-12, 25-22), a team that has been on an 18-match winning streak.
The Falcons recently beat Mt. San Antonio College (25-20, 25-17, 25-15) on Friday and finished the regular season 13-7 overall and 10-5 in SCC play.
After the loss to Pasadena, Cerritos played the Mounties “with a chip on its shoulder” as coach Teresa Velazquez-Ortega stated.
“That loss to PCC inspired us to finish out the season on a strong note, and I encouraged the team to play with a little more enthusiasm and energy.”
Versus the Lancers of Pasadena City, the Falcons knew they had their work cut out for them with the winning streak Pasadena had going and the toughness in the backcourt the Lancers poses.
Cerritos was never able to get over the hump that Pasadena created but the Falcons played strong and with the enthusiasm needed to beat Mt. SAC.
Sophomore Sarah Naranjo who, has been a key player for Cerritos all season long, had 21 kills against the Mounties.
Sophomore Angelica Sievers tallied 17 digs and Sophomore Monique Gayton had 31 assists versus Mt. SAC.
With the playoffs just around the corner, Cerritos volleyball has a positive outlook on what’s ahead and will look to finish strong in the last conference match at LA City College.
Ortega feels confident in her team’s near future and feels the Falcons have a great chance to go far in the playoffs.
Just a few improvements and works of perfection consist of the teams passing and serving.
Although Cerritos players tally big numbers in kills, kill errors are a concern as well but that is why practice exists.
