The Cerritos College men’s water polo team competed against American River College at home, which ended with the Falcons defeating the Beavers 18-12.
Falcons driver Derrick Johnson who scored six points in the game stated that he was nervous at first.
“I felt kind of weird cause I only score one or two (points) every game,” Johnson said and added he is practicing almost everyday getting better.
“ Last week we had a bad performance but since then we been pulling it together,” he said. “ Before the game started I was nervous cause they where big but after we started I gained my confidence.”
Johnson explained he will be ready for Friday’s match against Mount San Antonio College.
“ I feel our team is getting faster better on counter attacks and also being aware on the weak side.”
He explained that its his first season in the water polo team and been learning a lot from other players and coach.
Johnson said“ my goal is hopefully we win state but for now I worry about wining regional.
Another player on the Cerritos College men’s water polo team is freshman Chad Castro.
He explained that he was happy for the turn out versus American River after the Falcons have been working so hard on improving he said.
“We were pretty much ready, ” he said before the game with American River and explained that he is preparing for the game against Mt San Antonio.
“We are going to lose some sophomores but we freshmen have to step it up for next year.”
Castro explained that he hopes everything turns out well so they could compete in regional.
Cerritos College men’s water polo Head Coach Joe Abing explained that American River game turned out great and is looking forward to competing against Mt San Antonio College.
Abing said,” We won 18-7 and we also had a good lead” also explaining that Cerritos is getting for the conference championship after Mt San Antonio.
“ Just to play in our full potential and train hard in practice and hope we have good results,” Abing said.
