For freshman Angela Covarrubias, staying focused and having a positive mentality is key for the women’s swimming team when they take part in the Cuesta Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
“I stay focused by having a positive mindset and trying my best on the next race,” said Covarrubias.
The Falcons, who are now 2-0 in the conference after picking up wins against El Camino College and Long Beach City College last Friday, will attend the Cuesta Invitational before continuing conference play.
“We’re (the falcons) all well rounded swimmers, and we all contribute into bringing points for the team,” said Covarrubias.
Head coach Sergio Macias admits that the Cuesta Invitational could pose some challenges.
“There will be some high caliber swim teams that we will be able to compete against so our better swimmers will definitely have plenty of competition at Cuesta (College). Weather is also a factor so we have no choice but to tough it out in the rain, wind or hail.”
Macias likes the challenges the team will face week in and week out.
“Every team we face will impose a different challenge. As a coach it’s always fun to see how your team responds to a challenge from opponents,” he said.
The swim season has got off to a good start for the Falcons, as they haven’t placed anything lower than third place in events.
To keep his women focused, Macias has set goals going into competitions.
“One of our goals is to continue to improve weekly and obviously to compete and beat the opponent that is swimming next to you.”
The Cuesta Invitational will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Falcons will then continue conference play against Rio Hondo College and Mt. San Antonio College on March 15.
