The women’s soccer team advanced to the third round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs with a 5-0 win over Santa Monica College on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
The Falcons held Santa Monica to two shots in both quarters, while the team shot 24 shots the whole game.
Nayeli Requejo, forward, notched up three goals, with Ashley Anaya-Webb, forward, and Carolina Ornelas, forward, adding goals of their own.
Joe Pehanich, Head coach for Santa Monica, said that his team got a lot out playing Cerritos College.
“It’s nice to play such a competitive team, playing the former state champs is a learning experience for program that is coming up,” Pehanich said, “ I know that they are going to go on and do great things in this season and seasons to come.”
Pehanich said that even though the team lost, it was still a positive season for the team who break the record for most wins and goals for the season.
Karen Monzon, centerback for Santa Monica, also praised her team for reaching the second of the playoffs after not reaching that level for many years.
Ruben Gonzalez said that even though the team did play well, he felt that his team could have made better passes and finishing off the team’s scoring opportunities.
Requejo, who was name California Community College Athletics Association Female Athlete of the Month for October, said that if her team played like it did against Santa Monica than Cerritos College will have no problem with Cypress.
Cerritos College will be host Cypress College in the third round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Nov. 29 at 11 a.m.
