The Cerritos College women’s volleyball team hit the road for the first time this season and started the road campaign on the wrong foot.

The Falcons were defeated in straight sets by the Riverside Community College Tigers before a crowd of 40 people at Wheelock Gym at RCC.

Cerritos College lost by scores of 25-16, 25-18, and 25-18 respectively.

Leading the way for the Falcons were Nicole Spigner (9 kills), Monica Vega (7 digs), and Natalie Caravantes (23 assists).

“I just wanted to put the ball down,” said Spigner. “[The team] made a lot of mistakes and we basically shot ourselves in the foot.”

Head coach Teresa Velazquez said, “I want my team to learn from tonight’s loss. We have to practice hard and motivate each other when we put it into a game-like situation.”

“I need to practice blocking,” said Kayley Stephens, who finished with 6 kills in the match. “But more importantly, as a team, we need to communicate more, work together, and be prepared.”

The Falcons will play in two tournaments, one at Fullerton College on Friday, Sept. 25 and at San Diego City College on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The first game at Fullerton College will be at 1 p.m.

The Falcons next home game will be on Friday, Oct. 2 against Long Beach City College at 6 p.m.
