If this is what the Cerritos Falcons men’s basketball team looks like at full strength, the rest of the state may have something to worry about.
“The [rest of the state] should just be ready because once we touch playoffs its going to be a wrap, ” freshman Brian Nebo said.
The team scored a 111-62 blowout win over the struggling LA Southwest Cougars, Friday Feb. 12.
Before the game guards Khalid Washington and Tyler Payne joked that this game the team would reach the century mark. Once the game started it didn’t look like a joke.
“It was a big milestone. During shoot around it was me, Jamal [Watson] and Tyler [Payne] and we were just joking around saying we were going to score 100 and blow them out and we put that in,” Washington said.
One game removed from suspension Nebo, Watson and Elvis Okafor made their presence felt early in the game.
“We took it as a learning experience to get stronger mentally. It was a mistake made but we did what we had to do,” Nebo said.
“All the talk about us being suspended and people trying to make fun of us we just came out here and played and it was a good all-around team effort,” he added.
He finished with 15 points, four assists and two steals.
The trio scored 27 points in the first half while the entire Cougars team could only muster 28 points.
In the first half Cerritos took advantage of the lack of post presence for LA Southwest as the Falcons scored 26 points in the paint in the first 20 minutes of play.
“We just wanted to be aggressive and take good shots. Obviously they’re a team that’s struggling so we just want to play our game,” May said.
Watson was a big part of that with his team-high 18 points.
“We prepare for the better teams, even though this wasn’t one of the better teams we came out there like we were supposed to. You can’t let up on a softer team,” Watson said.
Heading into this game it was interesting to see which unit May would start the game with.
He chose to start Nebo, Washington, Payne, Luis Medearis and Marquise Scott despite having everybody back and eligible to play.
“We’ve got ten guys that are all playing really well and they’re capable guys. We can mix-and-match and do a lot of different things, we’re versatile.” May said.
Washington said after the LA Harbor game that he was not sure which lineup his coach would go with but the team would be ready to play.
After this game Washington stood by the notion that it really doesn’t matter who he sends out there.
“To be honest it doesn’t matter, we all just try to go out there and do the best we can and get the win,” he said.
Due to unforeseen circumstances for the last game and this game being a blowout early, the team’s role players have been logging more minutes.
“This is a team game. Coach tells me ‘every time I put you in the game just go play your game.’ So I’m not really worried about minutes or anything, I go out there and do what he wants me to do,” Okafor said.
He had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
One reason the team was able to find so much success was the fact the team was sharing the ball the best it has all season.
“We all feel confident in each other. We all know we have the ability to [make plays] so we just get the ball to the next man and let everybody else make the play,” Jonathan Brown said.
He finished with 11 points and five of the team’s season-high 22 assists.
Following the game May went to the whiteboard and wrote “[two] more.”
Signifying the team has two more games to win until it can call itself conference champions.
