The Cerritos Softball team obtained their sixth defeat against Chaffey College 10-4 on Friday, Feb. 22.
In the first inning, the Falcons took a 3-0 lead thanks to runs scored by sophomore shortstop No. 9 Tena Spoolstra after sophomore third base No. 32 Kayla Hernandez singled from left side.
Sophomore first base No. 27, Keira Bolinas, scored after right field No. 5 Victoria Medina singled in the middle. Hernandez scored thanks to a fielder’s choice from outfielder No. 36, Itzel Soto.
In the second inning, Cerritos added another run thanks to Bolinas after Hernandez doubled to center field. The score was 4-0 in favor of the Falcons.
The top of the third inning saw Chaffey score it’s first run thanks to No. 9 Tatyana Carvajal, however the Panthers were still behind 4-1 after three innings.
The fourth and fifth innings were both scoreless, which kept Cerritos in the lead 4-1 until the top of the sixth inning.
In the sixth inning, Chaffey would tie the game after a 3-run homer from pitcher No. 20 Veronica Macias.
Third base No. 50 Tyani Lowe and second base No. 40 Alyssa Diaz also scored for the 4-4 score.
The Panthers were not done yet, Carvajal scored another run after a fielder’s choice from No. 8 Brianna Bernal and the Falcons were losing 5-4.
Chaffey scored another five runs in the sixth inning. The sixth run was scored by No. 12 Bryana Martinez after a throwing error from Spoolstra, and fielders choice from No. 10 Arianna Villegas.
The seventh run was scored by No. 11 Denise Baire after Diaz was a fielder’s choice.
The eighth and ninth run were scored in the same play. Lowe doubled in the left center meanwhile Villegas and Bernal scored to extend the Panthers lead 9-4. The final run was scored by Diaz.
Head Coach Kodee Murray was not available for comment.
Assistant coach Brendan Ashley when asked on the team’s performance said, “We started strong in the first and second innings scoring, we played great the first five innings, had 10 defensive plays until the sixth inning.”
When questioned on the improvement of the team Ashley stated, “We have to be tough on the plate and better on pitching.”
The Falcons previous three games resulted in: Cerritos 1-4 Riverside City, Cerritos 8-0 Los Angeles Harbor, Cerritos 10-2 Long Beach City.
The Falcons Softball team will travel to Rio Hondo College on Monday, Feb. 25 to face off against the Roadrunners.
On Thursday, Feb. 28 the Falcons host the Tartars of Compton College. These games are at 3 p.m. and are conference matches. After the conference matches, the Falcons will host the Pirates of Ventura College on Friday, Mar. 1 at 2 p.m.
