The Cerritos men’s basketball team defeated the Compton Tatars 90-82 giving them back-to-back conference wins.
The Falcons were able to put up 90 points in this game which is two points shy from a season high.
Cerritos was led by a four-man crew with Everett May, Dillon Botts, Darron Henry, and Taeo Thomas combing for a total of 67 of the team’s 90 points, all of them scoring over the double-digit mark.
The game started off great for both teams as Compton and Cerritos would go back and forth draining multiple three-point shots to start the game.
But as soon as the Tatars three-point shots stopped falling the Falcons went on a huge 23-8 run to take a commanding 18-point lead with six minutes left in the first half.
Compton would respond and shrink the lead down to seven at halftime after a huge three-point play giving them momentum going into the second half.
Going forward the game stayed competitive until the final buzzer as Compton refused to stay out of the game making Cerritos fight hard for this victory.
Cerritos went on to shoot at amazing efficiency in the second half shooting at 63% from the floor but despite the great shooting efforts they struggled majorly from the free-throw line which kept Compton in the game.
“Staying poise as much as I possibly can and having my teammates back, playing hard and making plays for guys and putting us in the best position to win,” said Henry when speaking about how to keep the team together while losing control of the game.
The Tatars would eventually get the deficit down to a three-point game but Cerritos made the adjustments when they needed to and in the end, got the win.
Cerritos shot the ball extremely well shooting at an efficient 56% from the field, while Compton would go 48%.
“They got some talent on that team and we did get off to a good start, everyone is fighting for their lives right now so I give them the credit,” said Falcons Head Coach Russ May, “They played pretty well tonight and fortunately enough were able to make plays down the stretch to ice the game.”
The Falcons are currently riding high with tons of momentum winning their last four games and going 8-3 in their previous 11 games.
“Just stay focused and keep believing in each other on the team and the players believe in each other, they are putting in the work and we’ll see what happens next week,” said May.
“Staying humble and staying level-headed we got a lot of good teams in this conference we’re still trying to find our mediate and play our best and take it one game at a time”, said Henry.
This was a huge win for the Falcons as they earned their second straight conference victory they improved to an 11-9 record season after a slow 3-6 start to the season Cerritos has turned it around.
Their next game is on the road as they take on Los Angeles Southwest hoping to continue their win streak to five games.
